Call us- Mr Andrew Lyons - Consultant Maxillofacial Head and Neck Surgeon
Mr Andrew Lyons is the leader of the service. He is a Consultant Maxillofacial Head and Neck Surgeon at the adjacent Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. He has been a consultant for over 10 years having previously worked at Kings College Hospital. Although he is an experienced resecting surgeon, he has a special interest in vascularised bony reconstruction leading to full dental rehabilitation. In addition to this he has a special interest in the treatment of osteoradionecrosis avoiding hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
He is an examiner in the FRCS exam and has run international courses on Reconstruction of the Head and Neck and Osteoradionecrosis. He has published and lectured on his special interests and conducts basic research into Human Papilloma Virus and the relationship of growth factors to osteoradionecrosis. He referees papers on head and neck surgery for a number of peer reviewed journals. - Mr Jean-Pierre Jeannon - Consultant ENT Head and Neck Surgeon
Mr Jean-Pierre Jeannon MBChB FRCS (OTO) FRCS (ORL-HNS) is a Consultant ENT Head and Neck Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust. He is Clinical Lead of the Head and Neck Multi Disciplinary Team at Guy’s Hospital and Chairman of the South East London Cancer Network Head and Neck Tumour Working Group. He is a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Jean-Pierre Jeannon was born in London and graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School. He undertook his basic surgical training in Birmingham and his higher ENT surgical training in Newcastle upon Tyne. There he spent a year of full-time research working at the Cancer Research Unit studying molecular markers in head and neck cancer. He spent an additional year of advanced head and neck surgical fellowship training at the University of Toronto and Princess Margaret Hospital with Dr John Jonathan Irish and Dr Dale Brown.
In 2001 he was appointed Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital London. During his seven years of consultant practice he has helped develop and re-organise head and neck Cancer services in South East London. This is now one of the largest head and neck centres in the UK managing over 450 new cases per year.
His surgical interests are salvage surgery following chemo-radiation, reconstruction, thyroid and salivary gland surgery.
His research interests include: molecular biology and translational research in head and neck cancer.
He has published over 25 peer review papers, two book chapters and one book in various subjects in head and neck surgery. He has given over 20 presentations to international meetings. - Mr Ricard Simo- Consultant ENT Head and Neck Surgeon
Mr Simo is a Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist Head and Neck Surgeon working in the NHS at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Trust. Prior to this, he was a Consultant at University Hospital Lewisham for five years.
He has a dedicated practice to head and neck oncological surgery, thyroid, parathyroid and salivary gland surgery. He is a member of the Guy’s and St Thomas multidisciplinary head and neck and thyroid oncology teams which provide cancer services to South East London and a tertiary service for complex head and neck oncology and thyroid surgery.
Mr Simo graduated from the University of Barcelona in 1988, trained in Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery in Shrewsbury, Nottingham and Manchester. He was awarded a travelling fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Glasgow to undertake further training in head and neck oncology and thyroid surgery in Philadelphia in the USA.
Mr Simo has published over 60 original articles in peer reviewed medical journals and has authored five chapters in national and international head and neck surgery textbooks.
He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer and Clinical Advisor at Guy’s, Kings and St Thomas’ Medical School. He is actively involved in training and teaching undergraduate students, postgraduate doctors and GPs and is a faculty member of several national and international head and neck courses. He is a reviewer for several otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery journals and has been an invited speaker in major national and international meetings and conferences.
His areas of expertise lie in Head and Neck Oncological Surgery, Thyroid, Parathyroid and Salivary Gland Surgery. He also has an interest in Complex and Revision Head and Neck surgery which stems from his tertiary head and neck practice in Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. - Professor Mark McGurk- Consultant Maxillofacial Head and Neck Surgeon
Professor McGurk received his undergraduate dental degree from Sheffield University in 1976 and completed a medical degree in 1984. In 1991 he was appointed Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and in 1992 took up the Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Dental Institute at Guy’s, King’s College and St Thomas’ Hospitals (formerly UMDS).
Although he is trained in the full remit of maxillofacial surgery his two main areas of interest are management of head and neck cancer and minimally invasive treatment of salivary gland disease including tumours.
Professor McGurk has published extensively in the area of oral neoplasia and has pioneered the introduction of minimally invasive techniques to surgery in the head and neck region. He has led a European sentinel node trial, the aim of which is to reduce the incidence of neck surgery for tumours of the mouth. He has also championed simple low morbidity treatment for benign parotid tumours. The results of his work in both the management of head and neck cancer and salivary gland disease are published in medical literature. - Dr Steve Connor- Consultant Neuroradiologist
Dr Connor MRCP FRCR has been a Neuroradiology Consultant at King’s College Hospital since 2001 and an honorary consultant in head and neck radiology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital since 2005.
He is the lead radiologist for maxillofacial, ENT and head and neck cancer services at King’s College Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. Dr Connor has a large and varied workload including CT and MRI in the diagnosis and staging of head and neck disease.
He has written regional network diagnostic imaging guidelines for head and neck cancer imaging.
Dr Connor is an educational supervisor for the King’s College Hospital radiology training programme with regular lectures to ENT/maxillofacial/neurosurgical training programmes and national ENT and radiology meetings.
He has published over 80 peer reviewed articles, is deputy editor for the journals Imaging and Neuroscience Imaging and regularly acts as a referee.
Dr Connor also contributes to an expert panel reviewing national head and neck imaging guidelines. - Dr Michael R Fenlon- Consultant in Restorative Dentistry
Dr Michael Fenlon BDentSc, MA, PhD, FDS, MGDS is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry with a special interest in head and neck cancer prosthodontics at Guy's and St Thomas’s Hospitals NHS Trust. He is clinical lead of the head and neck cancer prosthodontics team, which is an integral part of the head and neck multidisciplinary team at Guy's Hospital.
Dr Fenlon has long experience in advanced prosthodontic techniques, the use of dental implants and has sub specialized in the prosthodontic management of patients who have had surgical resection of the head and neck area with or without reconstruction. His experience of working closely with the reconstructive surgeons of the multidisciplinary team, particularly with Mr Andrew Lyons, contributes to the patient experience and improved outcomes in terms of improved appearance, better function and quality of life for patients.
Dr Fenlon received his undergraduate degree in Dentistry from Trinity College Dublin in 1980. He gained broad experience before commencing higher specialist training in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics at Guy's Hospital between 1990 and 1997. Dr Fenlon is Reader in Prosthodontics at King's College London Dental Institute. His academic activities include director of the Masters and Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics) course for mono specialty trainees in prosthodontics and examining in the conjoint examination for the Membership in Restorative Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
His research interests include quality of life of patients treated with reconstructive techniques after tooth loss and after cancer treatment. He is involved in the development of novel materials and techniques for use in prosthodontics. He has published widely and is on the editorial board of peer reviewed journals. Dr Fenlon is regularly invited to speak at research and clinical meetings nationally and internationally on the subject of prosthodontic rehabilitation of head and neck cancer patients.
- Dr Mary Elizabeth Ann O’Connell- Consultant Clinical Oncologist

Mary Elizabeth Ann O'Connell was appointed Consultant in Clinical Oncology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in 1997. She is the Lead Clinical Oncologist in head and neck cancer and also for thyroid cancer within the trust. The Head and Neck Oncology Unit serves a large population in South East London and has one of the largest referrals in the UK. She works within the Multidisciplinary Team at Guy's and St Thomas' with all members of the surgical units including Ear Nose and Throat, Maxillo-facial Surgery and Plastic/Reconstructive Surgery. Her research interests include integration of new drugs in combination with radiotherapy for head and neck cancers, investigating new drugs for treatment of metastatic medullary thyroid carcinoma and the development of new radiotherapy planning techniques such as Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy.
- Mrs Jackie Brown - Consultant Dental and Maxillofacial Radiologist
Mrs Jackie Brown is a specialist in Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology. She is currently Consultant in Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals Foundation Trust, and works within King’s College London Dental Institute of Guy’s, King’s College and St Thomas’ Hospitals. She is also Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Dental Radiology at the Eastman Dental Institute in London.Special interests include head and neck ultrasound, maxillofacial 3D imaging, radiological and ultrasound investigation and treatment of salivary gland disease, and the use of minimally invasive endoscopic and radiologically-guided techniques for the relief of salivary gland obstruction.
